The Miami Valley TechFest 2005 will be held Saturday and Sunday, February 19 and 20, 2005 at the David Ponitz Center, Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio. This event will combine a “festival” atmosphere with a “serious side” in a special celebration of the Past and Future of Innovation and Creativity in the Dayton/Miami Valley area. The festive part will be where adults, kids, families, moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas can have fun sharing and learning about technology - past, present and future. The serious technical part will be where adults and students can find information on schools, careers, job opportunities, and technical and professional organization membership. TechFest has four main goals: (a) To celebrate the past, present and future of math, science, engineering, and technology contributions to the quality of life in Dayton and the Miami Valley. (b) To assist youth in grades K-to-12 (and their parents) make informed academic and career path choices. (c) To help youth (and their parents) become aware of the potential of Dayton and Miami Valley businesses and educational organizations whose core competencies are in math, science, engineering, and/or technology. (d) To publicize the role of professional societies in the professional development of individuals that lead to the economic strength of Dayton and the Miami Valley. TechFest 2005 will provide Dayton and Miami Valley youth with numerous opportunities to interact with experienced people from professional societies, companies, educational institutions, businesses, and other technology-based organizations from the Dayton and Miami Valley area. This event will showcase the educational and career opportunities offered by these organizations. Our goal is to have at least 2005 youths participate. Specifically, participating organizations and individuals will have hands-on and interactive glimpses of the mathematics, science, engineering, and/or technology content of their profession. They will let the youth and young professionals know what pathways and opportunities there are in math, science, engineering, and technology. Fifty-five organizations participated in 2003 with 940 students from 185 different schools as well as over 100 home schooled youth. This activity is supported by the Engineering and Science Foundation of Dayton, a component fund group of The Dayton Foundation, and is carried out by the Affiliate Societies Council (ASC) of Dayton as a collaborative project with members of the Affiliate Societies Council, representatives of area colleges and universities, businesses, and government partners. TechFest 2005 is building on the strengths of previously successful ASC sponsored Career Exploration Weekends and TechFest 2003. Additional information is available at the TechFest website.
